Innovative solutions for diagnostic challenges of the future – these were at the centre of the fourth edition of the „Diagnostics-4-Future-Conference“ in Konstanz, Germany. On two days, physicians and laboratories presented diagnostic challenges in clinical daily routines and traded thoughts with entrepreneurs and researchers to enable the development of new methods. With this outstanding combination, the conference has become firmly established in the diagnostics sector. The focus was on the detection of infectious diseases and cancer as well as digitalisation and the use of artificial intelligence in the health system.

The Laboratory of the future – more data for the patient’s benefit?
Together the experts ventured a perspective how diagnostic laboratories will change in the next ten years to meet new requirements in medicine and healthcare. According to experts’ opinion, handling of complex and big data will play a central role here. But all innovation should be centred on the benefit for the patient. Among the highlights of the event was the talk of Razvan Ionasec from IT flagship Amazon, who showed how innovative data management could enrich diagnostics, reduce costs, and facilitate the access for patients in the future. Professor Christiane Brockes from the swiss company alcare presented concepts for patient supervision and care with the help of telemedicine. The clinical need for new tests for the precise detection of rare life-threatening diseases was detailed by Professor Paul Graf La Rosée from Schwarzwald-Baar Klinikum.

Interactive program offers partnering platform for new solutions in diagnostics
The conference started with organised one-on-one talks to get to know the participants and facilitate the exchange about possible joint projects. Recent diagnostic products were presented by around 30 exhibitors on site. A new program item was the pitch competition where participants could provide innovative ideas for better diagnostic solutions. According to general vote, best ideas were then presented to the audience on stage.

“The conference brings diagnostic developers from industry and research together with users from the clinic and laboratory side. The personal trade of thoughts between experts is the basis for practicable solutions for the growing challenges for our health system “, says Dr. Michael Steinwand, chairman of BioLAGO and scientific coordinator of the conference. BioLAGO is by now the biggest cross-border competence network for diagnostic industry and research in German-speaking countries. The event was supported by ETO Gruppe, M24You, Scienion and the city of Konstanz.
